At 3 months most babies will:

  • Smile and make cooing sounds
  • Turn toward light or bright colors
  • Grasp rattles or hair
  • Lift their head and chest while laying on their stomach

At 6 months most babies will:

  • Follow a moving object with their eyes
  • Turn toward a sound
  • Roll over from stomach to back
  • Reach for and pick up objects
  • Recognize familiar faces
  • Begin to babble

At 1 year most babies will:

  • Crawl
  • Drink from a cup
  • Wave bye-bye
  • Pull themselves to standing
  • Say one or two words

At 2 years many toddlers will:

  • Eat with a spoon
  • Show affection
  • Play independently
  • Build a tower of four blocks
  • Talk in 2-3 word sentences

At 3 years most children will:

  • Walk up stairs alternating feet
  • Put on their shoes
  • Repeat rhymes or songs
  • Use the toilet
  • Play with other children for a few minutes
At 4 years most children will:
  • Hop in place
  • Throw ball over their head/catch a ball bounced to them
  • Points to six basic colors
  • Knows own gender, age, and last name
  • Plays with other children
  • Uses sentences with correct grammar, such as, "May I go to the bathroom?" or "I want a big cookie."
  • Washes hands unassisted
At 5 years most children will:
  • Walks backward heel-toe
  • Runs on tiptoe
  • Prints a few capital letters
  • Recognizes own printed name
  • Cuts food with knife
  • Plays with others
  • Responds by showing penny, nickel, and dime
  • Answers verbally to, "Hi", and "How are you?"
  • Laces shoes
